How Much Does It Cost To Raise A Baby?

Did you know that raising a baby is expensive?  Of course you do!  But just how expensive are babies?  Let’s take a look at a few of the costs.

The first major expense of having a baby is prenatal care and the actual delivery costs.  On average, you will spend some $1,900 on prenatal care.  For the delivery, it can be natural or by cesarean section.  If the baby is delivered naturally, the average cost is $7,500.  Otherwise, the average cost is $13,500.  Balancing these probabilities, the average baby will cost you $12,800 at this stage.

Secondly, all mothers will experience some lost income.  On average, new mothers can expect to lose $33,000 in income during the first two years.

Next we should consider the costs to feed and clothe your baby.  On average, you will spend $9,360 to feed and clothe your baby during the first two years.

Then we should consider the costs for daycare.  While these costs vary a lot, depending on the region of the country that you live in, the average mom will spend some $16,300 during the first two years for daycare.

Lastly, we must consider the costs of baby furniture.   The average mom will end up spending some $2,579 just on this category during the first two years.

Adding these figures up, we can see that the average baby (the first two years of life) will cost you $74,039 to raise, on average!  Now you know.
