Sony Backs Ban On Blu-ray Porn
Sony has come out and stated that they will not allow porn to be made on the Blu-ray platform. This comes after it was announced not long ago that the porn industry would be using HD-DVD as the standard in the next-generation war format.
This has sparked many porn consumers out there to say that HD-DVD will win the format war simply because of this ruling on Sony’s part to try and keep the media off of the device.
The belief is that porn could truly be the key to the next-generation DVD war because of freedom. If the manufacturers out there are not free to put simply anything they want out there on the platform then some may shy away from it since it would not be a free platform similar to DVD and VHS mediums.
The porn industry needs to have the freedom along with other facets of the industry to put out just about anything they want and to try and make a profit off of it. If Sony begins to restrict what type of content goes onto the platform then it will shy away consumers and keep the mainstream market from latching onto the medium.
In order for a format to be successful it needs the support of not just its core audience, but the mainstream audience as it has to be recognized as the medium that is used for every single facet of entertainment. This is how DVD became the de facto medium and if Sony continues this ban on porn the way it is doing they could end up shooting themselves in the foot the more the format war rages on.
