What is a school essay?
A school essay is used to denote several kinds of essays. A school essay can be a high school essay. It can be a law school, a dental school, a business school or even any graduate school essay. A school essay can also be used to denote essays written as part of the application to colleges or graduate schools. However, the term is usually taken to mean high school essays.
High school essays can be free from a string academic bent and the rigours of academic writing such as style (MLA style, Chicago style). High school essays can also be free of any critical commentary. History essays can be academic essays or essays written as part of the curriculum or they can also be essays on non-academic issues written by high school students. Essay writing competitions which are organised for high school students are generally non-academic in nature. They are generally either argumentative in nature such as debate topics like ‘Are co-educational schools better than single sex schools?’ or ‘Is censorship necessary?’ to give two random examples. Or they ask the student to write about pressing issues of the times like writing an essay on climate control or keeping the environment well protected. Such high school essays tend to make the young minds, the future generation, think about important issues. English term paper topics tend to raise awareness among the youth about more serious issues. These essays can also be labelled as school essays.
School essays can also be written for school magazines. By definition and practice, essays are not works of fiction. Thus, short stories cannot be termed as essays. Only prose pieces which are non-fictional in nature can be counted as essays. School essays of an academic nature are also interesting as they allow the student to present her or his views. These essays are designed to encourage to student to think about the text and the concepts. At the basic school level, these essays deal primarily in clichйs but in some subjects they also allow the student to express their thoughts without being influenced by any critical commentary. Such essays are interesting to read as they allow one to see what the student thinks and may also shed new light on the text or concept. In case of scientific concepts and laws, the student has to be either right or wrong but the essay allows the opportunity for the student to explain her or his understanding of it fully. In doing so, the student can clarify whatever doubts she or he may have regarding the topic and form a better understanding of it.
An academic school essay is thus very helpful for students and is an interesting form of evaluation for teachers as well. Academic school essays are being encouraged more nowadays as opposed to more formal kinds of examination. An academic school essay also allows the student more time to think about the subject and thus come up with better answers or better and more fuller expressions of their understanding of the subject.
