My favourite super food
Recent years have seen the
increasing popularity and consumption of goji berries in western countries such
as US, Japan, Canada and Europe. I am a goji fan. I have done
some research about goji berries, and would like to share with you.Anti-aging:
Free radical attack on our
bodies is the primary cause of aging. Free radicals are unstable oxygen
molecules derived from pollutants, smoking etc. Free radical attack is simply the oxidation process. It has
been found that ANTIOXIDANTS can neutralise
and destroy free radicals (oxidants), thus significantly slowing the aging
process and provide a protective barrier for our bodies. Antioxidants help keep
our skin, hair, organs, muscles, blood, and arteries youthful. Goji
berries contain the highest levels
of antioxidants than any other food on earth! So it is good for anti-aging.
Anti-cancer:
The goji berry contains
unique polysaccharides (natural complex carbohydrates) that exhibit powerful
anti-cancer properties. A study in 2001
showed that goji berries polysaccharides inhibited the growth of
human leukemia cells. Another study
in 2002showed that goji berry
polysaccharides combined with a standard cancer drug LAK/IL-2, was 254%
(2.5 times) more effective at reducing tumors than using the standard cancer
drug by itself.
Spirulina
are floating filamentous cyanobacteria with cylindrical trichomes in left-hand
helix. Spirulina grows naturally
in tropical and subtropical lakes with high pH and high concentrations of
carbonate and bicarbonate. It is commonly used as food supplements. For
centuries Aztecs have been eating Spirulina. The earliest record reveals that it
grew in Lake Texcoco, and was collected and sold as food. The first Spirulina
manufacturing factory was established in 1970s. Recent years it has become a
popular thing in the world, and has been approved by the FDA, WHO and other
medical authourities as health food. Spirulina is rich in
proteins, vitamins and minerals. It contains Lysine, Cysteine, Methionine,
Phenylalanine and Threonine, whic are important amino acids that can only be
acquired by human beings through food. Spirulina is also a very rich source of
Vitamin B-12. It has much higher iron content than Spinach. It contains much
higher amounts of Beta-Carotene than carrots.
Wheatgrass is the young grass of the common wheat plant (Triticum aestivum), taken just after sprouting. It is freshly juiced or dried and grounded into flour for human consumption. The consumption of wheatgrass began in the 1930s. At that time Charles F Schnabel tried to popularize this plant.
About 70% of its content is chlorophyll. chlorophyll is the basis of all plant life, and is probably the most health promoting nutrient. Science has proven that chlorophyll
arrests growth and development of unfriendly bacteria. Wheatgrass also contains 20 amino acids, several hundred different enzymes not found in other foods, as many as 90 out of 102 possible minerals, vitamins and other important nutrients. It is a great supplement for people on diet, for sports people, and for people who want to maintain a healthy immune system.
