Key West Info
“People come to Key West to Heal”, is what they keep telling me here. More than just once I’ve had those exact words uttered to me, with a knowing nod and a deep gaze. They hint at the magic aura of Key West, they mention the ahh, the specialness, the healing powers of the island.
“You sure you’re not thinking of Maui?” I always think to myself. I always thought Maui was the Island of Healing. Now locals here in Key West are claiming the title.
Perhaps. But I see otherwise. I see people coming to Key West to escape the straightjacket of the real world. And I see people coming here to be who they really are. In other words, I think people come to Key West in order to become what they can’t be back home. They come here to be free.
Key West judges nobody, and asks no questions. Nobody will ask you where you went to college or where you grew up. It just matters that you are presently in Key West. Your past is irrelevant, and so is your future, for that matter. If you are in Key West, you’re here to have a good time. Period. And even the people here to make money off tourists are having a good time, otherwise they’d leave. It’s just to darn expensive here to stay if you’re not enjoying yourself. If you don’t enjoy Key West fishing or Key West snorkeling, there’s no reason.
Do you need to ride a glitter and feather-covered bicycle at night wearing a viking helmet?
Go for it.
Do you need to be taken seriously as a karaoke mega-star?
Happens every day in Key West.
Do you need to be openly gay in the gayest tropical city in the world?
Right here.
Do you need to be in a naked parade at least once a year?
Two words: Fantasy Fest
Do you need to fly above the ocean tied to a boat?
Try parasailing at a Key West resort.
That’s right, people come here to be free. You can become that free person you’ve always wanted to be, that uninhibited person just below the surface scratching to get out. Key West will draw out that person and encourage him or her to grow.
Maybe that’s what those people meant when they said folks come here to heal. Maybe some people are broken because they can’t be free? So coming to Key West lets them be who they want to be, which heals them.
I wasn’t broken before I came here. I do know that the longer I live here the more excited I get for Fantasy Fest and all the clothes I’m not going to wear. For me, it’s definitely all about things like Fantasy Fest, nothing else.
