How to Write Classification Essays
Classification essays are used to discuss particular groups or subjects that have common characteristics or features. This can apply to many subjects such as Literature, History,
Science, Mathematics and Psychology. Poetry has many different categories such as
Sonnet, Soliloquy and many others. Specific poems that fall into each category can be analyzed and discussed. Other discussion can focus on why a specific piece or work belongs in a specific category, using parts of the work for example, as well as comparison to similar works from different authors. Comparison of historical events into categories is also possible. Wars, revolutions and political movements are different categories that are used to describe different historical events. There are various psychological theories that full into specific groups or types, though one theory can be categorized by more than one type. In Science, categories of species with similar characteristics are often grouped together. Different types of Mathematical equations or problems fall into different types or categories as well.
When writing law school essays research and evidence is important. Identification of a group, system or category must be presented logically. In the introduction, presenting a specific item or event into a category may be the main thesis or topic. A general statement is provided in the introduction, with evidence in points of discussion following in the body of the paper. Academic or scholarly sources should be used to help show why specific categories or groups are used. Each point of discussion or type of evidence should be evaluated in a new paragraph or paragraphs. The main point should be mentioned in the first sentence, with detail following. All paragraphs should flow smoothly, with transition statements or sentences used to link points of discussion. The conclusion should summarize points or the main point discussed in the paper. All in text citations should be properly referenced, using the style required by a student’s academic institution or instructor. Classification essays can be interesting assignments that teach students how to think critically and learn how subjects or items are categorized. Some students may face challenges in proper categorization, particularly with subject matter that they have little knowledge of.
