Entheogen & Shamanic Herbs

Etheogens are medicinal psychoactive herbs used in either religious or shamanic practices around the world. Entheogens have played an important role in spiritual ceremonies and practices for centuries and their use has been reported from almost every culture around the world. Entheogens are reported to help shamans enter scared realms of mystical perception. Shamans throughout time have used herbs to enter altered states of consciousness to receive insight from spirit guides, look deeply into their own self egos, explore present and past reality, and even to heal various illnesses.

A well known and highly researched entheogen used by the Mazatec shamans of Mexico, Salvia divinorum, is often referred to as the Diviners sage. Salvia divinorum originates from the Oaxaca area of Mexico where it is used to induce shamanic visions of divination and curing. Salvia divinorum is also used in these regions to treat various ailments like anemia, headaches, rheumatism and others.

Another interesting entheogen is the Amanita muscaria mushroom. Amanita muscaria usage has been recorded back into the days of the Vikings throughout Siberia and surrounding regions. The shamans of Siberia used the Amanita muscaria mushrooms to enter a trance like state and for religious reasons. There are also a handful of unconfirmed reports which indicate Amanita muscaria use in the Native American tribes Ojibway and Dogrib. Amanita muscaria mushrooms have also become quite common in modern day pop culture, although one must speculate if the authors are aware of the mushrooms traditional history. It has become quite common in recent times to see images of the bright red, white speckled mushroom graphics dancing through computer games, cartoons, books and even on a wide variety of art.
